There is a new band in town.
For all you geeks you might want to
look out!
This is just a temporary logo, just a concept.
Don’t know where it’s going yet.
If you don’t know what Dvorak is, its an alternate layout for a keyboard (pronounced /ˈdvoɹæk/). Most computer users use the standard “QWERTY” keyboard layout. This references the first keys on the top left.

The Dvorak keyboard layout is design to optimize the key layout so that users can really type faster because the keys that are most used. The Dvorak layout was designed by Dr. August Dvorak, not to be confused with the composer, Antonín Dvořák. The original QWERTY layout was design so that typists using the typewriter wouldn’t jam the little typewriter heads that pressed the ink to the paper. So essentially it was design to reduce the speed of those who typed on the keyboard.
With the introduction of the electric typewriter jamming was not a problem, but the QWERTY keyboard stuck.
Here are the principles behind the Dvorak Keyboard:
- Letters should be typed by alternating between hands.
- For maximum speed and efficiency, the most common letters and digraphs should be the easiest to type. This means that they should be on the home row, which is where the fingers rest, and under the strongest fingers.
- The least common letters should be on the bottom row, which is the hardest row to reach.
- The right hand should do more of the typing, because most people are right-handed.
- Digraphs should not be typed with adjacent fingers.
- Stroking should generally move from the edges of the board to the middle. An observation of this principle is that, for many people, when tapping fingers on a table, it is easier going from little finger to index than vice versa. This motion on a keyboard is called inboard stroke flow.
The only problem with the keyboard is that most institutions teach typing classes using the QWERTY layout and to introduce a new typing layout is like learning a whole new language. I found it to be hard because at my job I use the QWERTY keyboard and I thought it might look odd if I brought my own keyboard around with me just to type.
But its a great band name! haha…
